External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Brazil’s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin on Friday in New Delhi to discuss enhancing cooperation in trade, energy, connectivity, health, and technology.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), EAM Jaishankar said,
“A pleasure meeting @geraldoalckmin, Vice-President and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services of Brazil. Discussed the potential for greater cooperation in trade, investment, energy, connectivity, health and technology.”
Bilateral Engagement
The discussions highlighted opportunities for increasing bilateral trade, boosting research and innovation, and strengthening energy and pharmaceutical cooperation. The two leaders also explored collaboration in emerging sectors, including Artificial Intelligence and digitalization.
The Vice President’s office confirmed that both leaders expressed optimism about expanding economic ties between the two countries.
Strategic Cooperation
Vice President Alckmin, in India since Wednesday, is holding a series of meetings to deepen India-Brazil relations in trade, industry, energy, and strategic areas.
Earlier, Alckmin met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, where both sides emphasized the strategic importance of defence and security collaboration, one of the five pillars of India-Brazil relations.
His visit follows the sixth India-Brazil Strategic Dialogue, held in New Delhi on October 3, led by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Brazil’s Ambassador Celso Luis Nunes Amorim. Discussions covered cooperation in defence, energy, critical minerals, health, pharmaceuticals, and coordination in multilateral forums such as BRICS, IBSA, and the upcoming COP-30 climate summit in Brazil.
Economic Focus
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Brazil in July, both nations agreed to raise bilateral trade to USD 20 billion within five years. Vice President Alckmin’s visit is expected to further strengthen this partnership and pave the way for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s state visit to India next year, continuing the roadmap set during the Modi-Lula summit.
