India’s pursuit of a $5 trillion economy is not merely a financial benchmark but a transformative journey aimed at lifting millions out of poverty, establishing world-class infrastructure, achieving energy security, and advancing digital empowerment. At the 9th Annual Convocation of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Sambalpur, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Dr. P.K. Mishra, underscored this vision, drawing inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s roadmap for Amrit Kaal.
Dr. Mishra highlighted the three pillars driving India’s journey towards a developed economy by 2047—“Reform, Perform, and Transform.” He emphasized that the global economic landscape is undergoing rapid change, presenting both challenges and opportunities. With disruptions in supply chains, rising geopolitical tensions, and evolving trade patterns, he urged future leaders to be agile and innovative in navigating these shifts.
Reflecting on India’s strengths, Dr. Mishra noted the country’s demographic advantage, expanding infrastructure, and technological prowess. He elaborated on India’s growing geopolitical influence and strategic partnerships, alongside its thriving diaspora and soft power contributions on the global stage.
Recognizing India’s emergence as a global innovation hub, he cited the country’s position as the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem with over 100 unicorns. Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes have bolstered sectors such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy, opening new opportunities in manufacturing and logistics.
Dr. Mishra reiterated India’s commitment to sustainability, highlighting the ambitious goal of installing 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. He mentioned India’s leadership in clean technology initiatives such as the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the International Solar Alliance, and the Global Biofuel Alliance. He emphasized that the future of India’s economy depends on skilled professionals in green finance, electric vehicles, carbon trading, and circular economy practices.
With more than 800 million internet users, India’s digital economy is flourishing. Technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, and Industry 4.0 are shaping industries, making digital literacy essential for the country’s workforce. Dr. Mishra urged graduates to embrace lifelong learning, take the entrepreneurial route, and focus on ethical, inclusive, and sustainable business practices.
In line with the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—“The world is one family”—Dr. Mishra encouraged students to become leaders who manage not just businesses but also diversity, values, and change. He called on them to be courageous, resilient, and forward-thinking in addressing real-world challenges.
Dr. Mishra’s speech serves as a guiding light for young professionals, inspiring them to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s transformation.
