Deepika Padukone Says Big-Budget Films No Longer Excite Her After Exiting Spirit and Kalki 2

Deepika Padukone has opened up about her changing priorities as an actor after stepping away from two major pan-India projects—Spirit and the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD. The star, who delivered a standout performance in the 2024 blockbuster Kalki 2898 AD, revealed that large-scale commercial films no longer motivate her as they once did.

In a new conversation with Harper’s Bazaar India, Deepika explained that she now prefers meaningful storytelling over the pressure of delivering massive box-office numbers.

She said, “Honestly, how much more fame, success, or money? At this stage, it’s not about that anymore. It’s not about the ₹100-crore films, or even the ₹500–₹600 crore ones.” When the interviewer noted that she has already achieved extraordinary milestones, Deepika added that her creative goals have evolved. “That doesn’t excite me anymore. What excites me is empowering other talent. My team and I are focused on enabling storytelling and supporting creative minds—writers, directors, and new producers. That’s what feels meaningful now.”

Why Deepika Left Spirit and Kalki Sequel

Earlier in 2025, reports suggested that Deepika exited Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit after discussions around her schedule as a new mother. The role later went to Triptii Dimri. Months later, the makers of Kalki 2898 AD announced that Deepika would not return for the sequel to the sci-fi epic starring Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan.

Deepika Padukone’s Upcoming Films

Despite these exits, Deepika has a strong lineup ahead. She reunites with Shah Rukh Khan in King, directed by Siddharth Anand and also featuring Suhana Khan. The film is expected to release in 2026. She will also star opposite Allu Arjun in Atlee’s next, tentatively titled AA22xA6, slated for a 2027 release.

With a renewed focus on impactful storytelling and creative collaboration, Deepika is stepping into a new phase of her career—one that reflects both purpose and artistic evolution.
