A cyclone shelter worker in Gajapati district died suddenly while assisting evacuees during Cyclone Montha relief efforts.
The incident occurred at Potar Panchayat in Rayagada block.
Surendra Gamang, a supply assistant, had been actively working at the shelter since October 26. He helped transport villagers to safety and coordinated food arrangements for over 20 residents. On Monday night, he fell ill after completing his duties and returned to his room.
Locals noticed his condition worsened by morning. They rushed him to the district headquarters hospital in Paralakhemundi. Doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Samiti member Lokanath Dalai confirmed that Gamang had been traveling village to village in heavy rain, spreading awareness and urging people to move to shelters. He remained committed to his responsibilities despite harsh conditions.
Gamang’s death has left the community in mourning. His family expressed deep grief over the loss. Officials acknowledged his dedication and service during a critical time.
