A cyclone shelter worker in Gajapati district died suddenly while assisting evacuees during Cyclone Montha relief efforts.

The incident occurred at Potar Panchayat in Rayagada block.

Surendra Gamang, a supply assistant, had been actively working at the shelter since October 26. He helped transport villagers to safety and coordinated food arrangements for over 20 residents. On Monday night, he fell ill after completing his duties and returned to his room.

Locals noticed his condition worsened by morning. They rushed him to the district headquarters hospital in Paralakhemundi. Doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

Samiti member Lokanath Dalai confirmed that Gamang had been traveling village to village in heavy rain, spreading awareness and urging people to move to shelters. He remained committed to his responsibilities despite harsh conditions.

Gamang’s death has left the community in mourning. His family expressed deep grief over the loss. Officials acknowledged his dedication and service during a critical time.

The district administration continues to manage cyclone-related challenges. Heavy rainfall persists across Gajapati. Relief teams remain active in affected areas. Authorities have ensured food, shelter, and medical support for displaced residents.

Gamang’s contribution to disaster response highlights the risks frontline workers face. His efforts helped protect lives during a severe weather emergency. The government may consider support for his family in recognition of his service.
