The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for several districts in Odisha as Cyclone Montha is set to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to the state from October 28, even though the system is likely to move away from the coast after forming its eye over the Bay of Bengal.
Heavy Rainfall Expected on October 28–29
According to the IMD, the impact of Cyclone Montha will be most intense between October 28 and 29.
A red warning has been issued for Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam, where extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected on October 28.
An orange alert has also been issued for Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha, and Puri, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely.
On October 29, districts such as Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Rayagada will remain under the red warning, while Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Boudh, Nuapada, and Balangir have been placed under orange alert for continued intense rainfall activity.
Wind Speed and Possible Damage
Wind speeds are expected to reach 60–70 kmph in southern Odisha and 50–70 kmph along the coastal belt, particularly in Puri, Khordha, and Kandhamal districts. The IMD warned that gusty winds could cause damage to thatched houses, uproot trees, and disrupt power and communication lines.
Farmers may face crop damage, especially in low-lying paddy and vegetable fields. The sea will remain very rough to high, prompting a strict advisory for fishermen not to venture into the sea from October 26 onwards. Those already at sea have been urged to return to the coast immediately.
Authorities on High Alert
The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has directed district administrations to stay on high alert and prepare for potential flooding, landslides, and disruptions in essential services.
Rescue and relief teams have been kept on standby, and the state disaster response units are closely monitoring the cyclone’s movement in coordination with the IMD and Odisha Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA).
Impact on Daily Life
Authorities have warned of possible transport disruptions due to fallen trees and waterlogging. The state government has advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during heavy rainfall, and follow official weather updates closely.
Farmers, particularly in southern and coastal districts, are urged to take preventive steps to minimize agricultural losses.
