Severe cyclonic storm Arnab has intensified over the Bay of Bengal and is rapidly closing in on the Andhra Pradesh–Yanam coast, with its outer band already brushing the shoreline and bringing heavy rain and gusty winds to coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system advanced 18 km in the last 24 hours. Earlier forecasts had placed landfall on the morning of October 28, but faster movement has pulled the timeline forward. Regional Weather Centre scientist Dr. Manorama Mohanty said the cyclone is now expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh–Yanam coast between 2 AM and 4 AM on October 28. “Landfall possibility exists 3–4 hours earlier than previously estimated,” she noted.

At the time of landfall, sustained winds are forecast at 125–135 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 150 kmph. IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra confirmed that Odisha is already experiencing winds of around 60 kmph along with widespread rainfall. Coastal districts of both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are under the influence of rain and strong winds as the outer band makes contact with land.

The storm is classified as a very severe cyclonic storm. Officials have warned of potential damage including uprooted trees, snapped power lines and poles, and harm to weak structures and temporary shelters. Cloudy skies, moderate to heavy rain, and gusty winds are already being felt across coastal areas. Meteorologists also observed that the cyclone’s eye is beginning to open slowly.

While the core is tracking toward the Andhra coast, Odisha will not remain unaffected. Southern and coastal districts are expected to see significant rainfall and gusty winds, with Malkangiri likely to experience particular impact. Residents in vulnerable coastal zones have been advised to stay indoors and follow official advisories as the system moves closer overnight.

Authorities continue to monitor the cyclone’s path closely, with further updates expected as it approaches landfall in the early hours of October 28.
