A youth from Banki in Cuttack district died after sustaining severe burn injuries in a self-immolation attempt.
The incident occurred in Ostia village on Sunday night, leaving the victim with nearly 90 per cent burns.
The deceased, identified as Amiya Singh, was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for emergency treatment. Despite efforts by doctors, he succumbed to his injuries.
Family members alleged that Amiya faced prolonged distress over employment issues following his father’s death. His father worked at the Jobra Ground Water Department, and Amiya had hoped for a job on compassionate grounds. Seven years later, he remained unemployed despite completing his graduation, which reportedly caused frustration and mental strain.
However, Amiya gave a different version before his death. He claimed that a woman named Mona had been blackmailing him, leading to severe mental stress. He stated that harassment pushed him to take the extreme step, denying direct involvement of any other person in the incident.
Police acknowledged the conflicting accounts and began an investigation to determine the exact circumstances. Officials have not yet issued a formal statement, but the probe continues to verify whether personal distress or harassment triggered the tragedy.
