Orangutan Rescue Case: Investigation Based on Evidence, Not Assumptions, Says STF DIG

Odisha orangutan trafficking probe

Five baby orangutans swinging in a coastal casuarina grove should never have been there. They are not Indian wildlife. They belong in the rainforests of Indonesia, Malaysia, Borneo and Sumatra. Their sudden appearance in Baleshwar’s Bhograi block has now pulled Odisha’s Special Task Force into what officials call a possible international wildlife trafficking case — the first of its kind suspected in the state.

On Tuesday morning, villagers and a Van Suraksha Samiti member near Ranakotha-Badpahi in the Udayapur-Talsari forest belt first thought they had spotted unusual monkeys. Forest staff who reached the spot found three males and two females, all infants of roughly six months to a year. The animals were calm enough to be caged by hand. They are now in quarantine at Nandankanan Zoological Park, where officials say their health is stable.

Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia has said each animal could fetch Rs 20–25 lakh on the international black market. The working theory is grim and simple: smugglers may have dumped the infants after fearing interception along the coast, which sits close to the West Bengal border and the sea. Air, rail and port routes are all under review.

The Crime Branch STF has taken the lead. Inspector General Himanshu Kumar Lal first ordered a special team into Balasore. On Wednesday, STF Deputy Inspector General Dr Kanwar Vishal Singh made the agency’s line clear: the investigation is evidence-based, not rumour-driven. CCTV footage has already surfaced. Combing operations, vehicle-movement records and other material are being collected jointly with the Forest Department and local police. The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau has also joined.

“The STF investigation has begun. We are working with the Forest Department and local police. CCTV footage has come forward. The inquiry is entirely evidence-based. Some assessments or guesses being circulated now are not correct. The STF is gathering facts from every angle. Only after the investigation will the real truth emerge,” Singh said.

That caution matters. Forest officers themselves have stressed that smuggling is a strong possibility — natural migration is almost impossible, given there is no habitat corridor — but conclusive proof of a racket is still being built. Regional Chief Conservator of Forests Prakash Chand Gogineni has described the episode as looking like a “botched transit operation.” Balasore DFO Pratik Prakash Indalkar has said human intervention is the most plausible explanation, while stopping short of a final conclusion.

Nandankanan has housed an orangutan before. Any decision on public display will wait for Central Zoo Authority clearance. For now, the priority is care, quarantine protocol and a paper trail that can stand in court.

Odisha has seen wildlife crime before. It has not seen five critically endangered great apes appear overnight in a casuarina plantation. That is why the STF hunt will continue — and why officials insist the story will be written by evidence, not by early estimates.
