Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Saturday apprehended a person accused of defrauding multiple women under the guise of marriage.
The accused has been identified as Satyajit Managovind Samal (36) from Jajpur.
Samal resided in Bhubaneswar’s Chandrasekharpur area. He allegedly swindled his victims on a matrimonial website by impersonating an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer. His arrest followed a sting operation by the Commissionerate Police.
According to reports, a female officer engaged with Samal, who had a history of fleeing to Dubai after conning women. The arrest was made following complaints by two victims at the Capital Police station. He is accused of cheating the first victim out of Rs 36 lakh for a car, and the second victim out of Rs 8 lakh and a motorcycle.
Sanjeeb Panda, the Twin City Police Commissioner, revealed on Saturday that the accused would rent out the stolen vehicles to earn money.
“Satyajit would take cash and vehicles from the victims after interacting with them on the matrimonial site, and then he would escape to Dubai,” Panda stated.
Further investigation uncovered that Satyajit had been in contact with 49 additional women on the matrimonial site. Moreover, two marriage agreement documents were confiscated by the police.
Panda explained, “The accused targeted divorcees, engaging with them on the matrimonial site. After formalizing a marriage agreement, he would take money and vehicles from them.”
The arrest was complicated by the fact that the accused frequently fled to Dubai. Consequently, a strategic trap was set, leading to his capture.
A senior police official reported the seizure of Rs 2 lakh in cash and several vehicles from the accused. Additionally, Rs 1 lakh from his bank account has been frozen. Accounts with deposits exceeding Rs 1 lakh and cash above Rs 2 lakh, as well as some vehicles, have also been confiscated.
