A tragic incident unfolded in Gumagarh under the Phulbani block as Manjulata Digal, a class 8 student from Nedipanga village, passed away during treatment at a hospital.
Manjulata, who was residing in a hostel, had been suffering from fever for the past four days.
Despite her condition, proper medical care was allegedly neglected, leading to her untimely death.
Her father, Gaurang Charan Digal, alleged that her death was a result of negligence by the school authorities. He disclosed that Manjulata had been battling tuberculosis prior to her recent illness, raising concerns about the lack of prompt and adequate care provided to her.
Following a complaint lodged by the family members at the Sadar police station, a case of unnatural death was registered. The police conducted an autopsy at the Sadar Sub-Divisional Hospital to determine the cause of death. Sub-Inspector Sambit Kumar Behera stated that the exact cause would be revealed upon receiving the autopsy report.
This incident highlights a growing issue of lax administration in hostels, as untimely deaths of students reportedly occur each year due to inadequate facilities and mismanagement. It is a stark reminder of the urgent need for accountability and systemic reforms to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
The district administration has faced criticism for its handling of such cases, with calls for immediate action to address these recurring tragedies. Manjulata’s death has sparked outrage and demands for justice from her grieving family and community.
