Despite persistent heavy rainfall across Odisha and a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, the state is not facing an immediate flood threat, according to Chief Engineer Chandra Sekhar Padhi.

However, authorities remain on high alert as weather conditions continue to evolve.

As a precautionary measure, 20 gates of the Hirakud dam have been opened, releasing 5.78 lakh cusecs of water at Mundali. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red warning for southern districts, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. An orange warning has also been issued for neighboring districts.

Padhi stated that while water levels are currently stable, local rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Mundali could lead to a rise. District collectors have been alerted, and field officials are actively monitoring the situation to ensure public safety. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to remain cautious and follow official advisories.

The situation is being closely watched as the low-pressure system is expected to intensify into a depression within 24 hours, potentially impacting river levels and drainage systems.
