The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced strict enforcement measures to curb rising air pollution in the city.

The civic body will impose a spot fine of Rs 5,000 on anyone caught indulging in open burning and will take direct action against establishments contributing to pollution.

BMC launched a crackdown on hotels and dhabas using coal-based or wood-fired challahs. Officials warned that non-compliant establishments may face closure. The enforcement drive begins from the Lingaraj Temple area and will expand across Bhubaneswar.

The civic body strictly banned open burning of garbage, dry leaves, cardboard, and other waste. Zonal Commissioners will identify violators and impose fines immediately. Shops violating the rules may be shut down, and owners will be directed to adopt clean cooking fuel.

BMC also mandated clean fuel for cooking under the Mid-Day Meal Programme in schools. Zonal Commissioners will ensure compliance to protect children’s health.

To reduce dust and emissions, CRUT will conduct water sprinkling at bus depots and stands. Daily cleaning and washing of buses will remain compulsory.

Ready Mix Plants in Bhubaneswar will face strict monitoring. BMC directed these units to comply with State Pollution Control Board guidelines, including water sprinkling and vehicle washing to control dust pollution.

The civic body emphasised that violators will face stringent action. Officials stressed that these measures are essential to improve air quality in Bhubaneswar and safeguard public health.
