A tragic accident occurred in Tal Patana under Dharakot police station in Ganjam district on Monday when a compressor tank at an ice factory exploded, killing one person and injuring three others.
Reports said Ramesh Chandra Mahapatra had recently set up a small ice-making unit at his residence to support his business. During repair work on the compressor, mechanic Bideshi Pradhan (56) from Kusapali village was adjusting the machine when the tank suddenly burst. The blast produced a loud noise, blowing off the tin roof of the house.
Neighbours rushed to the spot and rescued the injured, including Ramesh Chandra Mahapatra (75), Shobhabati Mahapatra (65), and Hemant Mahapatra (48). All four were taken by an 108 ambulance to Asika Medical, and later shifted to MKCG Medical College in Berhampur due to their critical condition. Doctors declared mechanic Bideshi Pradhan dead, while Ramesh and Hemant remain under treatment. Shobhabati’s condition has reportedly improved.
Dharakot police reached the site and initiated an investigation. Sub-Inspector Sasmita Panda registered case number 103/26 after receiving a complaint from the deceased’s son, Muna Pradhan. Police confirmed that the body was sent for a post-mortem before being handed over to the family.
