BJP leader and former legislator Jagannath Pradhan was granted bail by the Khurda District Sessions Court in connection with the alleged assault of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Additional Commissioner Ratnakar Sahoo—a case that has stirred political tensions and triggered state-wide administrative backlash.

Pradhan was arrested on June 29 and has been in judicial custody at Jharpada Special Jail. His bail plea was initially rejected by the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) Court in Bhubaneswar, prompting his legal counsel to move the Sessions Court.

The court took up the matter after the investigating officer submitted the case diary, as previously directed. After hearing arguments, the judge granted bail, bringing temporary relief to the senior BJP leader.

The incident had drawn sharp reactions from the Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) Association, which demanded stronger legal action and better protection for government officers on field duty. State-level protests and demonstrations were held, with the incident becoming a flashpoint for broader debates on political pressure and bureaucratic independence in Odisha.

The BJP, meanwhile, maintained that the case had been exaggerated for political mileage, calling for a fair investigation.

With Pradhan’s release, attention now shifts to the progress of the investigation and how this legal development may influence the region’s political narrative ahead of upcoming local elections.
