The Bharatiya Janata Party will select its first chief minister in West Bengal today after winning 207 of 294 assembly seats, ending Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year tenure.
The BJP legislative party will meet at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in Kolkata in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Leaders will then visit Raj Bhavan to stake claim, finalising the choice ahead of the May 9 swearing-in.
Suvendu Adhikari stands as the frontrunner for the chief ministerial post. He defeated Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur and rose from Nandigram movement leader to the BJP’s most prominent state face. Other contenders include Samik Bhattacharya, Sukanta Majumdar, and Swapan Dasgupta, but party sources indicate Adhikari holds the edge.
The oath ceremony will take place on Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. The BJP plans a public event at Brigade Parade Ground, breaking the tradition of holding it at the governor’s residence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief ministers are expected to attend, embedding the party’s rise in Bengal’s cultural narrative.
Analysts highlight governance challenges ahead. The new BJP government could leverage Centre-State alignment for development and law-and-order reform. Success may boost investor confidence and smooth central scheme implementation. Failure could deepen political distrust and industrial stagnation. The leadership style of the new chief minister will shape Bengal’s political and economic trajectory.
