The Mancheswar Police in the capital city have arrested a key fraudster, identified as Jitendra Kumar Bagarti alias Jitu, for allegedly duping job aspirants of over Rs 44.76 lakh by promising them employment in the Indian Railways.
According to police sources, the accused posed as an influential personality with high-level connections to trap unsuspecting job seekers. Operating a well-crafted fake railway recruitment website, Jitu collected cash and received multiple bank transfers totalling over ₹44.76 lakh from the complainant across various phases.
However, after receiving the staggering amount, the accused neither secured the promised jobs nor returned the money. When victims pressed for a refund, Jitu began evading them and eventually resorted to intimidation, threatening to throw acid on them and kill them if they demanded their money back.
Following a formal complaint, the Mancheswar Police launched a swift investigation and apprehended the accused. Investigators revealed that Jitu is a habitual offender with prior cheating and fraud cases registered against him at the Chandrasekharpur Police Station in Bhubaneswar.
Police have initiated a broader probe to determine whether the accused has defrauded other job seekers across various districts in Odisha using a similar modus operandi. Further investigation is underway to uncover the full extent of the scam and trace the proceeds of the crime.
