Following violent clashes involving online auto and taxi drivers in the capital, police have demolished an illegal auto stand near Master Canteen using a JCB machine.
The crackdown comes after widespread disorder during the drivers’ protest that began on August 17.
Authorities confirmed that 113 drivers have been arrested and 354 vehicles seized. The Transport Department has initiated proceedings to cancel permits of 400 vehicles, with possible cancellation of RCs and driving licences of those involved.
Seven FIRs have been registered at Kharavel Nagar police station – two based on public complaints, four from bus staff, and one from police personnel. Officials said compensation for damages caused during the violence will be recovered from the drivers themselves.
Urban Development Minister Dr Krushna Chandra Mahapatra condemned the incident, calling it “inhuman” and warning that the government will not tolerate lawlessness. He said: “Drivers who indulged in vandalism will face strict action. Their licences will be cancelled, and damages will be recovered from them.”
Meanwhile, transport services remain disrupted, leaving passengers stranded at airports, railway stations, and bus stands as online autos and taxis continue to stay off the roads.
