A shocking incident unfolded in Galaganda village under Tihidi police limits of Bhadrak district when a man allegedly set his mother on fire after she refused to give him money for liquor.

According to reports, the accused, Debashish Nayak (45), is a regular substance abuser. He first assaulted his mother, Jyotsnarani Nayak (65), and then poured petrol on her. When she fell to the ground, he set her ablaze.

Neighbours heard the commotion and rushed to the spot. They managed to rescue the victim and immediately shifted her to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital. Doctors described her condition as critical. Later, she was referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as her health deteriorated further.

Police confirmed the identity of the accused and initiated an investigation into the case. Authorities stated that the incident highlights the dangers of substance abuse and domestic violence, which continue to affect vulnerable families in rural areas.
