The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has instructed the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the development on Saturday, stating that the decision was taken in light of recent developments in the region. Speaking to ANI, Saikia said the board has also allowed KKR to seek a replacement player if required.
“Due to the recent developments, BCCI has instructed the franchise KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman from their squad. If the franchise requests a replacement, the board will permit it,” Saikia said.
KKR’s Auction Move and Aftermath
KKR had signed Mustafizur Rahman for INR 9.20 crore during the IPL 2026 mini-auction held in Abu Dhabi. The left-arm pacer attracted strong interest, with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) also bidding aggressively before KKR secured his services.
Following the auction, the decision drew public attention amid strained diplomatic and social sentiments between India and Bangladesh. Several political voices expressed concerns, while KKR and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan faced criticism on social media for the signing.
Rahman’s Availability and IPL Record
After being picked by KKR, Mustafizur Rahman had received a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), allowing him to miss the home series against New Zealand and remain available for the IPL.
In IPL 2025, Rahman represented Delhi Capitals as a replacement player, featuring in three matches and taking four wickets.
Overall, the experienced pacer has played 60 IPL matches, claiming 65 wickets. Over the years, he has represented several franchises, including Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Chennai Super Kings.
Looking Ahead
With the BCCI’s directive now in place, KKR is expected to evaluate replacement options as preparations for IPL 2026 continue. The league remains focused on ensuring smooth participation while adapting to evolving circumstances.
