Barely days after being opened to the public, Delhi’s newly inaugurated Barapullah Phase-III flyover has become a hotspot for massive traffic congestion, triggering a blame game among the traffic police, PWD, and political leaders.
Built at 1,635 crore rupees to connect Mayur Vihar Phase-I with Sarai Kale Khan, the 10-km signal-free corridor has instead created severe bottlenecks.
The Delhi Traffic Police pointed to an abrupt structural merger near the Sundial, where multiple streams funnel into a narrower stretch with limited lane capacity. Furthermore, officials stated that Google Maps has failed to reflect real-time congestion, luring unsuspecting commuters onto the clogged route.
While PWD minister Parvesh Verma noted that Google Maps’ algorithm takes around 15 days to update traffic data, he strongly blamed the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for the faulty design and planning. Authorities are currently evaluating short- and long-term solutions to ease the snarls.
