Two elderly women, who were sisters-in-law, were killed after being hit by a train near Basta railway station in Odisha’s Baleshwar district on Monday.
The deceased have been identified as Rukchand Marandi from Baunsatopha village and her sister-in-law, a resident of neighbouring Parulia village.
Reports indicate that the duo had gone to the Basta market earlier in the morning. While on their way back home, they were struck by the Howrah-bound Shalimar Express as they tried to cross the tracks near Basta station, resulting in both women dying instantly at the scene.
Upon receiving information, police and railway officials arrived at the scene, recovered the bodies, and secured the site. A formal probe has been launched to determine the cause of the incident.
