Tension prevailed in the Laltikra area of Balangir on Monday following a fatal road accident in which a speeding bus named ‘Krupamayi’ (OD-03-AJ-5062) struck and killed a young worker.
The deceased has been identified as Ishwar Majhi, a resident of the slum area behind the Sadar police station, who earned his livelihood working at a local shop in Laltikra. The incident occurred around 2 PM as Ishwar was returning home for lunch from his workplace near the irrigation office on the Balangir-Patnagarh road.
The impact left Ishwar severely injured and bleeding profusely at the scene. Quick-acting locals rescued him and rushed him via auto-rickshaw to the Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital, where attending doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Following the news, locals and enraged residents gathered at the spot, causing tension over the lack of road safety. Noting that Ishwar was the sole breadwinner for his wife and two young children, protestors demanded immediate financial compensation for the grieving family.
Local police reached the spot, brought the situation under control, seized the body for post-mortem, and launched an investigation into the mishap.
