Kandhamal: A baby elephant, who fell in a water-filled pit at Jiringipada village under Phiringia block in Kandhamal district was successfully rescued by the forest department on Thursday night.
According to reports, the matter came to the fore after some locals spotted the calf in the pit and immediately alerted the forest department about the same.
On being informed, a 10-member team reached the spot and launched an operation. The operation lasted for two hours.
Reportedly, an earth remover was pressed into service to dig a way into the well and finally, the baby elephant, which slipped a couple of times, came out. Later, the baby elephant was guided safely towards the forest.
