Australia A has announced a 14-member squad for its upcoming tour of India, featuring two four-day matches in Lucknow and three ODIs in Kanpur this September.
The tour is being seen as a crucial audition for players aiming to break into the senior team ahead of the prestigious Ashes series.
Among the notable inclusions are openers Sam Konstas and Nathan McSweeney. Konstas, despite a dip in form during the West Indies series, retains the backing of selectors and captain Pat Cummins. Chair of selectors George Bailey emphasised the long-term vision behind the squad, noting that repeated exposure to subcontinental conditions will prepare players for future tours, including the 2027 Test series in India.
Jake Weatherald, who impressed in the Sri Lanka series, was not named in the squad but remains in contention for Ashes selection due to his consistent domestic performances. Bailey highlighted the importance of timing and consistency in selection, stating, “The easiest way to combat uncertainty is to keep scoring runs.”
The squad also features promising talents like Xavier Bartlett, Lance Morris, and Todd Murphy, who are expected to gain valuable experience in Indian conditions. Former captain Ricky Ponting has urged patience with Konstas while endorsing McSweeney and Jason Sangha as strong contenders.
