The final journey of legendary singer Zubeen Garg concluded on Tuesday, with hundreds of fans, dignitaries, and family members gathering to bid farewell to the beloved artist.
Final Journey and Cremation
Zubeen Garg’s mortal remains were taken in a flower-decked ambulance from the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex, where his body had been kept since Sunday for public homage. Draped in a traditional Assamese gamosa and placed inside a cold glass coffin, the vehicle carrying his body was followed by thousands of grieving fans.
The procession culminated at the cremation site in Kamarkuchi, where Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and several other dignitaries joined Garg’s family and friends to pay their last respects. Assam Police accorded him a gun salute before the cremation.
Fans Sing His Favorite Song
In a poignant tribute, fans gathered at the site sang Garg’s popular song “Mayabini”, honoring the singer’s earlier wish that it be sung or played after his death.
Post-Mortem and Public Tribute
Earlier in the day, a second post-mortem was conducted at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital. After the procedure, Garg’s remains were brought back to the sports complex for final viewing before being taken to Kamarkuchi.
A large black-and-white portrait of Zubeen Garg adorned the front of the hearse, as his 85-year-old father and wife Garima Saikia followed in separate vehicles.
