Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman has addressed the recent backlash surrounding comments he made during an interview, releasing a video statement in which he reaffirmed his deep love for India and his lifelong commitment to serving the nation through music.

In the video, Rahman described India as his teacher, inspiration, and home, emphasising that his artistic journey has always been rooted in respect for the country’s cultural richness. He acknowledged that his words may have been misunderstood but stressed that causing pain was never his intention.

“Music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating, and honouring our culture. India is my inspiration, my teacher, and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood, but my purpose has always been to uplift and serve through music,” Rahman said.

The composer highlighted several projects that reflect his commitment to inclusivity and artistic freedom in India. These include nurturing initiatives such as Jhalaa, presented at the WAVES Summit, mentoring the Sunshine Orchestra, collaborating with young musicians from Nagaland, building a string orchestra, and creating Secret Mountain, India’s first multicultural virtual band.

Rahman also spoke about the honour of composing music for Ramayana, a global project he is scoring alongside renowned composer Hans Zimmer, describing it as a deeply meaningful milestone in his career.

“I feel blessed to be Indian. This country allows freedom of expression and celebrates multiple voices and cultures,” he added.

The statement concluded with visuals of a packed cricket stadium singing along to Rahman’s iconic patriotic song “Maa Tujhe Salaam / Vande Mataram”, reinforcing his enduring connection with the nation and its people.

The clarification comes after remarks made during an interview with BBC Asian Network, where Rahman discussed changes within the film industry, shifting power dynamics, and concerns about growing divisiveness. While his comments sparked debate online, many within the music and film fraternity have voiced support, highlighting his decades-long contribution to Indian culture.

Rahman ended his message by expressing gratitude and reaffirming his mission: “I remain thankful to this nation and committed to music that honours the past, celebrates the present, and inspires the future.”
