Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced on Thursday that any fresh removal motion or impeachment notice moved against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar will be rigorously examined strictly in accordance with laid-down constitutional and parliamentary procedures.
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi ahead of the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, Birla emphasized that the process for removing a CEC mirrors the statutory provisions governing the removal of a Supreme Court judge.
The Speaker’s statement comes amidst sustained Opposition protests alleging irregularities and arbitrary conduct during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. While earlier notices submitted by Opposition lawmakers were rejected by both Houses, secondary filings remain pending in the Upper House.
In addition to addressing questions regarding the poll chief, Birla commented on the disqualification petitions pending against rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs who merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), affirming that due legal hearings are underway. He also shared details about India hosting the BRICS Parliamentary Forum from October 26–27, highlighting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the delegation, which is set to focus on global issues including counter-terrorism, climate action, and ethical artificial intelligence.
