In an unprecedented administrative move to ensure seamless execution, high-level preparation for the world-renowned Puri Rath Yatra 2027 has officially commenced.
Chief Secretary Anu Garg chaired the inaugural preparation meeting at the Lok Seva Bhawan Conference Hall, focusing on early infrastructure development, crowd control protocols, and comprehensive pilgrim amenities.
The meeting—the first formal administrative assembly for the 2027 festival—emphasized early policy decisions and long-term developmental projects for the holy town of Puri. Key officials present included Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) and Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA); Director General of Police Shri Binaytosh Mishra; the Collector and SP of Puri; alongside senior departmental and police officers.

Infrastructure Expansion & Encroachment Drive
To facilitate smooth vehicular and pedestrian movement, authorities discussed urgent and long-term road projects. The Chief Secretary directed the repair and restoration of the road connecting Biraharekrushnapur to Balighat prior to the event.
To prevent last-minute bottlenecks, Puri District Collector was instructed to initiate early anti-encroachment drives along roads connected to Bada Danda (Grand Road) and clear street vendors. Additional road infrastructure focus areas include:
- Widening the Matiapada road for two-way traffic flow.
- Upgrading Bada Danda lanes and connecting alleys.
- Development of multi-level parking facilities, dedicated light motor vehicle (LMV) parking zones, and major bus terminals.
- Early mobilization by the Public Works Department (PWD) for road widening and emergency repairs.
World-Class Railway Station & Smart Command Center
The Railway authorities confirmed that the new state-of-the-art building at Puri Railway Station will be completed well before Rath Yatra 2027, with plans for an inauguration by the Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, Phase II of the Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC) is targeted for completion by March 2027, ensuring full operational capability before the festival to monitor crowds, traffic, weather anomalies, and fire safety in real time.
Healthcare Infrastructure & Emergency Protocols
Recognizing the massive influx of devotees, health services are receiving a major upgrade:
- Permanent Medical Facility: A new permanent hospital will be operationalized at the Malatipatpur Bus Stand.
- Hospital Relocation: The Puri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) will transition to its new, modernized building with dedicated green corridors for emergency transport.
- Volunteer Mobilization: Volunteer groups and stretcher-bearers will be identified and trained early to manage patient movements.
- Praise was also directed at the temporary health camps setup on Bada Danda during the previous edition, which will be further expanded in 2027.
Telecom, Power, Sanitation & Disaster Preparedness
- Telecom Boost: 22 to 25 permanent telecom towers will be erected in high-density areas to eliminate connectivity drops. Large LED screens linked to public announcement systems will be installed at key transit points.
- Power & Drainage: Uninterrupted power supply through new substations and upgraded cable networks will be ensured, with all utility digging halted well in advance.
- Sanitation: Mechanical sweeping, high-capacity temporary and permanent toilets, waste segregation, and enhanced drainage clearance will keep the holy city clean.
- Fire & Sea Safety: High-capacity pumps will be deployed for waterlogging emergencies, alongside Lifeguards, observation towers, and emergency access routes along the Puri beach.
Closing the meeting, Chief Secy Garg urged all participating departments to submit actionable proposals within strict timelines, complete tender processes early, and allocate contingency funds to ensure a safe, organized, and spiritually fulfilling experience for millions of devotees in 2027.
