Torrential rainfall has continued to lash Bhadrak district, prompting the local administration to declare closure of all schools—government and private—for a day across four vulnerable blocks.
District Collector Dilip Routaray issued the order late Tuesday, citing the deteriorating weather and rising flood threat.
Affected blocks include Dhamnagar, Tihidi, Chandabali, and Basudevpur, where waterlogging has engulfed low-lying areas, including parts of the district headquarters. According to meteorological data, Bhadrak received up to 159 mm of rainfall on Wednesday morning, the highest in the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted further intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over the coming days, raising alarm for extended flood risks. While students have been exempted from attendance, teaching and administrative staff are required to report to their respective schools.
Previously, the district had witnessed partial closures in Dhamnagar block’s panchayats earlier this week. With the downpour showing no signs of relief, the administration is expected to reassess conditions for Thursday and take further decisions accordingly.
Urban neighbourhoods and rural settlements are experiencing severe waterlogging, complicating movement and basic access. As authorities gear up to monitor the situation closely, the public has been advised to remain indoors and adhere to safety guidelines.
