Air India cancelled all flights to and from New York and Newark on January 25 and 26 due to a severe winter storm forecast for the US East Coast.
The airline announced the cancellations in a travel advisory posted on X, citing passenger and crew safety as the priority.
“A severe winter storm with heavy snow is forecast for New York, New Jersey and adjoining areas on the US East Coast from early Sunday morning to Monday, which will have a significant impact on flight operations. In view of the safety, well-being and convenience of our passengers and crew, all Air India flights to and from New York and Newark have been cancelled on 25 and 26 January,” the airline stated.
Air India assured passengers of assistance through its 24×7 call centre and official website. Thousands of flights across the US have already been cancelled as the storm approaches, with road travel expected to be difficult or impossible in affected regions.
According to CNN, two-thirds of the US population will face extreme cold and snow as the storm stretches over 2,000 miles from Texas to New England. At least 15 states, including New York, Virginia, Georgia, and Missouri, have declared emergencies to mobilise resources. Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration covering 134 counties, while Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a state of emergency for the capital.
US President Donald Trump said the administration is coordinating with state and local officials, with FEMA prepared to respond. The storm is expected to bring crippling ice accumulations, power outages, and subzero wind chills across much of the country.
