Ahmedabad has secured the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking the return of the multi-sport event to India after two decades.
Delegates from 74 Commonwealth member nations and territories ratified India’s bid during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly on Wednesday.
The approval followed last month’s recommendation by the Commonwealth Sports Executive Board, which proposed Ahmedabad as the host city for the centenary edition. India last hosted the Games in 2010 in Delhi, making this a significant milestone for the country’s sporting journey.
Dr Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, praised India’s role, stating, “India brings scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion and relevance. We start our next century for the Commonwealth Games in good health.” His remarks highlighted India’s growing influence in global sports.
Ahmedabad has upgraded its sports infrastructure extensively over the past decade, positioning itself as a strong contender not only for the Commonwealth Games but also for the 2036 Olympics, for which the city is already in the race.
India faced competition from Abuja, Nigeria, for the 2030 bid. However, Commonwealth Sport decided to consider Abuja for the 2034 edition, clearing the path for Ahmedabad’s selection.
The Commonwealth Games, first held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930, will celebrate its 100th year in Ahmedabad. The decision strengthens India’s ambition to host mega sporting events and underscores its commitment to promoting sports culture and infrastructure development.
