The Odisha government amassed a record-breaking Rs 1,234.88 crore in revenue from tobacco and pan masala products during the 2024–25 financial year, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced in the Odisha Legislative Assembly on Monday.
Responding to an inquiry posed by MLA Tankadhar Tripathy, CM Majhi detailed that Value Added Tax (VAT) and other statutory levies are rigorously applied to the sale of pan masala, gutkha, cigarettes, beedis, and assorted tobacco items across the state. Comprehensive data outlining the decade-long progression of these collections was officially tabled on the floor of the House.
A Decade of Upward Trajectory
The tabled statistics showcase a continuous, multi-fold expansion in state revenue streams from these goods over the past ten years:
