A deep depression over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is moving westwards and is likely to cross the North Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coast by night on September 23, 2026, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
According to the IMD bulletin based on observations at 5:30 am IST on September 23, the system moved westwards at a speed of 12 kmph during the past six hours.
The deep depression was centred at 5:30 am over the same region near latitude 18.0°N and longitude 84.7°E.
System 70 Km From Kalingapatnam
The system was located about 70 km east-southeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 150 km south of Gopalpur in Odisha, 230 km south-southwest of Puri and 150 km east-northeast of Visakhapatnam.
The system’s proximity to the coast has increased the likelihood of landfall later on Wednesday.
Likely to Cross Coast Near Kalingapatnam
The deep depression is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross the North Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to Kalingapatnam, by night on September 23.
The system is expected to cross the coast as a deep depression, according to the IMD.
The latest update comes as the weather system continues its westward movement over the Bay of Bengal and approaches the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast.
