The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has issued a public health alert against two unauthorised cosmetic products allegedly manufactured in Pakistan, warning consumers about potential health risks associated with their use.
The products flagged by the drug regulator are ‘Chandni Whitening Cream’ and ‘Goree Beauty Cream’.
According to the CDSCO notice, the creams were found to contain excessive levels of heavy metals beyond specified limits. The regulator warned that their use could have toxic effects and pose a serious health risk.
CDSCO Warns Against Unauthorised Creams
The CDSCO said cosmetic products sold to consumers must meet prescribed safety standards and comply with India’s regulatory requirements.
Under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the Cosmetics Rules, 2020, the manufacture and import of cosmetics are regulated in India. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) also lays down standards applicable to cosmetic products.
The regulator said manufacturers need to obtain a licence from the relevant State Licensing Authority to manufacture cosmetics for sale and distribution.
Imported cosmetics, meanwhile, must be registered with the Central Licensing Authority in accordance with the prescribed rules.
Consumers Advised Not To Buy Or Use Products
In its public health advisory, the CDSCO specifically advised consumers not to purchase or use ‘Goree Beauty Cream Made in Pakistan’ and ‘Chandni Whitening Cream Made in Pakistan’.
The regulator also cautioned consumers against similarly named unauthorised cosmetic products if they have already purchased them.
Instead, consumers have been advised to purchase cosmetics from authorised sources and check the product packaging for key regulatory information.
Check These Details Before Buying Cosmetics
According to the CDSCO, consumers should check whether cosmetic products carry details such as:
- Manufacturing licence number
- Manufacturer’s details
- Batch number
- Date of manufacture
- Expiry date
- Registration number in the case of imported cosmetics
The advisory comes amid concerns over the sale and use of cosmetic products that may not comply with India’s prescribed safety and regulatory standards.
The CDSCO has urged consumers to exercise caution and avoid unauthorised products, particularly those identified in its public health alert.
