A 28‑year‑old pregnant woman died after allegedly being kicked in the abdomen by a police officer during an attempt to arrest her husband in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district, triggering outrage and protests.

The victim, Anjali, reportedly pleaded with the police not to take her husband, Gaurav, accused in a theft case, when Sub‑Inspector Dharmpal Singh allegedly assaulted her late Sunday night at their home in Labhaua village under the Shikohabad area.

Anjali was rushed to a hospital, where she delivered a baby boy on Monday morning. Her condition deteriorated soon after, and she was shifted to a private hospital in Firozabad, where doctors declared her dead. The newborn remains in critical condition and has been referred to Agra for treatment.

Following the incident, villagers staged protests outside the local police station, demanding action. The Superintendent of Police Aditya Langhe suspended six personnel, including Sub‑Inspectors Dharmpal Singh and Satyapal Singh, Head Constables Mohan Singh and Arvind Kumar, and Constables Bhavtosh Kumar and Kuldeep Kumar, for negligence.

A heavy police deployment was made during Anjali’s post‑mortem and last rites late Monday night. Officials said the investigation is underway to determine accountability and prevent recurrence of such incidents.

The tragedy has reignited debate over police conduct and accountability in Uttar Pradesh, with calls for swift justice and systemic reform.
