The bizarre and high-profile rescue of five young orangutans from the Bichitrapur casuarina forest in Odisha’s Baleshwar district has taken a dramatic turn, with investigators pointing to a West Bengal hotel owner as a key suspect in the wildlife mystery.
The investigation, spearheaded by a joint team comprising the Odisha Forest Department, the Special Task Force (STF), and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), has zeroed in on Jayanta Maiti, the owner of the Grand Heritage Hotel in Digha and a resident of Andul, Howrah. Authorities are also scrutinising the role of his son, Soumyadeep Maiti, as the net tightens around the smuggling ring.
The SUV and the Hotel Clues
Central to the ongoing probe is a black SUV, for which Maiti is recorded as the second owner. Local reports and regional CCTV footage placed the vehicle moving through the Bichitrapur area late at night on September 7—just hours before the five infant orangutans were discovered abandoned in the coastal forest on September 8. Cameras captured the vehicle passing through the area at around 11:25 PM and returning shortly after at 11:40 PM.
In a major breakthrough, STF investigators raided and seized the CCTV hard disk from Maiti’s Digha hotel. Law enforcement hopes the digital footage will map the movements of key suspects and confirm whether the hotel or the vehicle served as a transit hub for the trafficked primates.
Unanswered Questions
The unexpected appearance of orangutans—native to the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra—in an Odisha coastal reserve has baffled wildlife experts and law enforcement alike. Following their safe recovery, the five young animals were transferred to the Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar, where they remain under close veterinary observation.
As investigators track down missing links and search for further accomplices, the primary focus remains on uncovering where the exotic animals were sourced, how they crossed international or interstate borders, and the ultimate destination of the illegal wildlife transport.
