Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee’s personal assistant Sumit Roy was arrested by the West Bengal CID on Thursday in connection with an alleged land grab case in Salboni, after the Supreme Court refused to grant him anticipatory bail.

According to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Roy was arrested from the TMC office at 121, Kalighat Road, after the Supreme Court’s protection against arrest was withdrawn.

Adhikari made the statement in the state Assembly and alleged that Roy was involved in collecting money on behalf of Abhishek Banerjee.

“He was a number collector of his nephew,” Adhikari alleged, referring to Roy as the “number one collector” of “Tola Bhatija”.

Court proceedings before arrest

A court in West Medinipur district had issued an arrest warrant against Roy on June 15. He subsequently approached the Calcutta High Court and later the Supreme Court seeking protection from arrest.

On August 6, the Supreme Court allowed Roy to file a Special Leave Petition and stayed his arrest until the matter came up for further hearing.

The top court’s refusal to extend anticipatory bail protection on Thursday paved the way for the CID to take action against him.

CID investigation into alleged land scam

The CID arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged land scam in Jhargram.

The case has emerged as a politically sensitive matter in West Bengal, with allegations involving land transactions and financial collections. The allegations made against Roy and others remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.

Important: The allegations against Roy mentioned in the report are not established as facts unless proven in court.
