From Odisha to the World: How Maliput Melodies Is Putting Odia Cinema on a New Map

A Koraput-rooted Odia anthology proves a story can travel the world without leaving its soil behind.

A film rooted in southern Odisha’s villages is travelling across continents — and answering an old question about regional cinema with unusual confidence. The idea of taking Odia cinema beyond Odisha has often come with an uncomfortable question: how much of its identity would have to be left behind for the world to notice? Maliput Melodies appears to be answering that question quite differently.

Rooted in the villages and landscapes of southern Odisha, the film reflects the music and lives of the people of Koraput. Having travelled to some of the country’s most significant cinematic platforms and onward to international festivals, it demonstrates a capability regional cinemas have always possessed, but have not always been given the chance to prove: that a story can speak beyond geography while remaining deeply local.

A rare national first, then a widening map

Directed by Vishal Patnaik and produced by Kaushik Das under Kaustav Dreamworks Studios, *Maliput Melodies* first made national headlines by becoming the only Odia feature film selected for the Indian Panorama at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in 2025. It was chosen among 25 feature films from across the country.

That recognition was not an isolated moment. The film’s festival journey has since extended across India, Europe, Australia and the United States, with selections at the Chennai International Film Festival, Khajuraho International Film Festival, Madrid Film Awards and the National Indian Film Festival of Australia. Most recently, it added an international competitive honour to that run, winning the Bronze Award for Best Feature Film – Fiction at the SCA International Film Festival in Los Angeles.

The significance of Maliput Melodies, however, lies beyond festivals and trophies.

A village that is both invented and lived-in

The film speaks the language of ordinary people. Casting local villagers of the region as artists has shifted the dynamic of filmmaking to its rawest form. The stories emerge from the soil of Koraput, but their emotions do not remain confined to it. The fictional village of Maliput becomes a larger cinematic landscape built around friendship, family, aspirations, traditions, disappointment and the quiet resilience of rural Odisha.

Written by Sudhakar Patnaik, the anthology grew from an idea that first took shape as a web series before evolving into a feature. What emerged was a film in which the landscape is not merely a backdrop, but an integral part of the storytelling. Its chapters — among them Kanophulo (earring), Rangomati (red soil), Baido Karia (music group) and a village marriage story — stay close to everyday life: small gifts, migration, waiting, music and ritual.

And perhaps that is where the film’s larger contribution to Odia cinema begins.

At a time when regional cinema is increasingly finding audiences beyond its traditional boundaries, Maliput Melodies is part of a larger shift in how Odia stories can be imagined, produced and presented.

Authenticity as method, not marketing

For Kaushik Das, Founder and CEO of Kaustav Dreamworks, the journey of Maliput Melodies is more than the journey of a single film. It is a statement of intent — and of belief — that the next chapter of Odia cinema need not be defined by how closely it can imitate larger industries, but by how confidently it can present its own voice.

Das’s idea was never simply to make another Odia film. It was to create a cinematic world that felt lived-in rather than constructed. The film was shot across remote villages with limited modern amenities, incorporating the region’s food, landscapes, colloquial language and cultural rhythms. A large majority of the cast came from the villages themselves, with only a small portion coming from theatre backgrounds. This approach was not simply a production decision. It was central to what the film was trying to say.

The result is a film that does not attempt to make rural Odisha look exotic for an outside audience. Instead, it invites viewers to observe it from within — to understand its humour, aspirations, vulnerabilities and small joys. The people on screen may appear ordinary. Their dreams and disappointments carry a universality that travels far beyond Koraput.

Director Vishal Patnaik, who also shot the film in and around Jeypore and locations such as Putsil, has framed the project in similar terms: stories rooted in the soil, yet universally relatable. The music, composed and written by Tosh Nanda, draws from the rhythm of forests, village life and local tradition rather than treating song as decoration.

Looking closer to home

From the remote landscapes where the film was created to the screens of IFFI Goa, Sydney and Los Angeles, Maliput Melodies has already begun to make the argument that Odisha’s stories can occupy a larger cinematic map without losing the cultural textures that make them uniquely theirs.

This also reflects something larger about Das’s approach to content. His belief appears to be that Odisha does not lack stories; what it needs is the conviction to tell those stories with scale, craft and confidence. The journey of Maliput Melodies is therefore less about taking an Odia film out into the world, and more about proving that the world can come to an Odia story when it is told honestly.

Quietly, and with considerable conviction, the film is showing that Odia cinema does not need to look elsewhere for stories worth telling. It only needs to look closer to home.

That is why the film’s journey matters beyond its festival selections and awards.

Kaushik Das is not trying to erase the word “regional” from Odia cinema. He is challenging the idea that being regional means being limited. With Maliput Melodies, the ambition is clear:

Keep the soil. Keep the language. Keep the people. And let the story travel.
