The 31-year-old niece of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was found dead at her residence in Birbhum district on Tuesday, police said.

The woman, who was the daughter of Banerjee’s cousin brother, was found in a room on the second floor of her house in Kusumba village in Rampurhat, according to police.

Her body was subsequently sent for a post-mortem examination. Police have begun an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.

What happened in Rampurhat?

The woman was found dead at her residence on Tuesday afternoon. Police said further details would emerge after the post-mortem examination and other procedural inquiries.

“The circumstances leading to the death will be established after the post-mortem and other procedural inquiries,” a police officer was quoted as saying by PTI.

The police have not publicly established a cause of death.

Family speaks about her health

According to family members cited by PTI, the woman had been undergoing treatment for depression for several years.

Her family also said she had lost her job following the Supreme Court’s decision concerning the cancellation of recruitments to government-aided schools amid allegations of irregularities and corruption.

The circumstances surrounding her death are now being examined as part of the police investigation.

Post-mortem report awaited

The post-mortem examination is expected to provide investigators with further information as they establish the circumstances of the death.

Police said the investigation remains underway and that conclusions about the cause of death would be drawn only after the post-mortem and other necessary inquiries.

No further details about the investigation were immediately available.
