Meteorologists have indicated that another low‑pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal by September 12–14, raising the possibility of widespread rainfall across Odisha.

Currently, the state is experiencing cloudy weather with light to moderate showers in isolated places. No major cyclonic circulation is expected until September 10, but after that, a system from the South China Sea may enter the Bay of Bengal, intensifying into a low‑pressure zone over the Andaman Sea.

The IMD has reported that the well‑marked low‑pressure system over Gangetic West Bengal, north coastal Odisha and northwest Bay of Bengal remains active, moving west‑northwest. On Tuesday, Bangiriposi in Mayurbhanj recorded a staggering 31 cm rainfall, while more than 10 locations in Mayurbhanj registered over 10 cm. Heavy showers were also reported in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Keonjhar.

Warnings have been issued for Wednesday, with yellow alerts for Sundaragada, Jharsuguda and Baragada districts. From Thursday onwards, no district has been placed under heavy rainfall warning, though light rain with thunderstorms and lightning is expected across Odisha.

Officials emphasised that the evolving system could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall in northern, southern and coastal Odisha once the new low‑pressure forms mid‑month.
