India’s medal hopes at the Asian Games 2026 have taken a huge blow after star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra confirmed he will miss the rest of the season due to an ankle ligament tear sustained during training in Lausanne.
The 28-year-old, who had just recorded his season’s best throw at the Lausanne Diamond League, revealed on Instagram that the injury occurred shortly after his performance. “Unfortunately, I sustained a ligament tear in my ankle during training. After discussions with my doctor and team, we’ve decided that I will sit out the rest of this season,” Chopra said.
The setback means Chopra will miss not only the Asian Games in Japan but also the Diamond League Final in Brussels scheduled for September 5. His absence is a major disappointment for India, as he was considered one of the strongest contenders for gold.
Chopra admitted the decision was difficult, especially as he felt close to regaining his rhythm. “It’s disappointing, but setbacks are part of the journey. My focus now is on recovering well and coming back even stronger,” he added, thanking fans for their support.
The injury caps a tough season for Chopra, who had struggled earlier in the year but showed signs of resurgence in Lausanne. His career achievements remain historic — Olympic gold in Tokyo 2021, silver in Paris 2024, and a World Championships gold in Budapest 2023, making him India’s most decorated track and field athlete.
For now, India will have to wait for the return of its biggest javelin star, as Chopra shifts his attention to recovery and rehabilitation.
