Tamil Nadu Govt Withdraws Order Restricting Students From Joining Protests

The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday withdrew an order that directed officials to take action to prevent students and youth from government arts and science colleges from participating in protests organised by Left parties and the Tamil Nadu Cockroach Janata Party (TNCJP).

The directive issued by the College Education Department was withdrawn within minutes, turning the brief communication into a political talking point.

What did the withdrawn order say?

The College Education Department had instructed officials to take “appropriate coordinated action” to prevent students and youth from joining protests organised by Left parties and the TNCJP.

The communication was sent to principals of government arts and science colleges across Tamil Nadu and described the matter as “very urgent”.

The department referred to a government letter dated August 14, which called for coordination between the School Education, Higher Education and Police departments, along with district administrations.

The directive was issued under the College Education Department, which functions under the Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.

Tamil Nadu govt withdraws directive

The order did not remain in force for long.

Minutes after the communication was issued, the department withdrew it. Joint Director of Collegiate Education Cynthia Selvi P said the earlier communication had been rolled back.

The quick reversal came after the directive had already been circulated to government colleges, prompting questions about the circumstances behind its issuance and subsequent withdrawal.

What is the TNCJP?

The Tamil Nadu Cockroach Janata Party, or TNCJP, is a group in Tamil Nadu that has approached the Election Commission seeking registration as a regional political party.

The organisation is reportedly led by Tamil Nadu-based lawyer C Brahma Balasubramaniam.

Its members have said they intend to focus on issues including social justice and the rights of workers, students and farmers.

The group says it is inspired by the broader Cockroach Janta Party movement but operates as a separate organisation.

Why is the Cockroach symbol significant?

The cockroach has become associated with the wider movement following remarks targeting protesting youth.

Supporters adopted the insect as a symbol of survival and resistance, and the name has subsequently appeared at local protests in Tamil Nadu, including demonstrations related to employment and examination issues.

The broader movement gained attention among young people through social media activity and protests.

The brief order comes amid growing political activity involving student and youth groups in Tamil Nadu.

The state government’s decision to withdraw the communication means the directive will not remain in effect. However, the episode is likely to draw attention because of its wording and the speed with which it was issued and withdrawn.

For now, the Tamil Nadu government has not indicated that the withdrawn communication will be replaced by another directive.
