Star Air Suspends Jharsuguda–Bhubaneswar Flights Till October 24, Western Odisha Passengers Hit

Star Air has temporarily suspended its Hyderabad–Jharsuguda–Bhubaneswar flight service, affecting direct air connectivity between western Odisha and the state capital. The suspension came into effect on Monday and is expected to remain in place until October 24, 2026, according to airport authorities.

The airline has reportedly cited operational constraints for the decision and has informed the Odisha government about the suspension. Sources said Star Air has also sought an extension of viability gap funding (VGF) support for another six months to help continue operations on the route.

ATF price rise affects flight operations

The suspension comes amid a rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, which has reportedly affected the financial viability of the service.

The Hyderabad–Jharsuguda–Bhubaneswar route has been an important air link for passengers travelling between western Odisha and the state capital. Its suspension could create additional difficulties for passengers who relied on air travel to avoid lengthy road and rail journeys.

Patients, students and business travellers likely to be affected

The direct air connection has been particularly useful for patients, students, business travellers and other passengers travelling between Jharsuguda and Bhubaneswar.

With the service temporarily unavailable, passengers may have to depend on road or rail connectivity or travel through alternative flight routes, potentially increasing both travel time and expenses.

The suspension is also significant for western Odisha, where reliable connectivity with Bhubaneswar is considered important for access to healthcare, education, government offices and business opportunities.

IndiGo remains only airline at Jharsuguda airport

At present, IndiGo is the only airline operating from Veer Surendra Sai Airport in Jharsuguda, with flights connecting the city to Delhi, Kolkata and Bengaluru.

The temporary withdrawal of the Star Air service has renewed concerns among residents over direct connectivity between Jharsuguda and Bhubaneswar.

Residents have urged the Odisha government to intervene and explore measures to restore the service at the earliest, stressing that a dependable air link between western Odisha and Bhubaneswar remains an important requirement.

What happens next?

The suspension is currently expected to continue until October 24. The continuation of the route could depend on the airline’s operational requirements and the outcome of discussions regarding VGF support.

For passengers planning to travel between Jharsuguda and Bhubaneswar during this period, checking the latest flight schedules and alternative travel options before making arrangements will be important.
