A chilling incident has rocked West Bengal’s Nadia district, where Congress leader Anisur Rahman and his son Abu Sufiyan were shot dead and attacked with sharp weapons near the Nagadi railway gate late Saturday night.

Rahman, 50, a member of the Bengal Congress Committee and general secretary of the Nadia District Congress, was returning home from Bethuadahari with his son when unidentified assailants ambushed their car. Both victims reportedly died on the spot.

Police have launched a manhunt for the attackers and begun a formal investigation. The incident has triggered tension in the area and renewed concerns over political violence in the state.

Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury condemned the killings, calling them “a grave reflection of Bengal’s deteriorating law and order.” In a social‑media post, he wrote, “I strongly condemn and denounce the murder of Anisur Rahman and his son. Such heinous acts on Independence Day raise serious questions about people’s safety and the right to freely engage in politics.”

Chowdhury demanded a fair and impartial probe, urging authorities to ensure justice for the victims.

Rahman was a respected figure in the Nakashipara area, known for his long‑standing organisational work within the Congress party. Police sources said multiple teams have been deployed to trace the culprits and determine the motive behind the attack.
