Odisha is facing a severe doctor shortage, with nearly 60 per cent of sanctioned posts lying vacant across the state.
Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling informed the Assembly that out of 15,774 approved doctor posts, 9,503 remain unfilled.
Currently, 6,271 doctors are serving in government hospitals. Among them, 1,135 work on contractual appointments, while 5,003 hold permanent positions. Consequently, the shortage has strained healthcare delivery, especially in rural and tribal districts.
The minister stated that the government has already written to the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) to fill 5,248 vacant posts. Moreover, he emphasised that recruitment drives and policy measures are underway to strengthen the state’s healthcare system.
