Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized the pivotal role of science and technology in driving development during his address at the ‘Scientific Recognition and Award Ceremony – 2023,’ organized by the Odisha Science Academy at the Lok Seva Bhawan Convention Centre.

The event, held on March 27, 2025, celebrated scientific achievements while outlining a vision to position Odisha at the forefront of progress through cutting-edge research and innovation.

In his speech, CM Majhi described science and technology as the “core mantra of development,” urging their application to bring sustainable changes for the common people. He stressed the need for grassroots-level research to enhance economic growth and elevate Odisha to a leading position globally. “Our primary goal is to harness advanced scientific research to take our state to the pinnacle of progress,” he said.

The Chief Minister highlighted the state government’s focus on deep tech and frontier technologies, including artificial intelligence, blockchain, robotics, and quantum computing. He also underscored Odisha’s potential in biotechnology, particularly in traditional medicine and marine resources, announcing plans for the Odisha Marine Biotechnology Research & Innovation Corridor. This platform aims to unite educators, researchers, and policymakers to tap into the biodiversity of the Bay of Bengal, creating a roadmap for sustainable innovation.

CM Majhi praised India’s global standing in science, citing achievements like Chandrayaan, Aditya, Mangalyaan, and Gaganyaan as examples of the country’s prowess in space research. He noted that Indian expertise dominates the global IT sector, reinforcing the need for Odisha to contribute to this legacy through advancements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Plans to establish a network of planetariums and science centres across the state were also revealed to promote STEM education.

The ceremony saw several distinguished scientists honoured for their contributions. Senior Scientist Awards were conferred on Prof. Raj Kishore Paramguru, Dr. Shubhranshu Shekhar Mahapatra, Prof. Krishna Chandra Mohanty, Dr. Raghupatruni Bhima Rao, and Prof. Malay Kumar Mishra.

The prestigious Biju Patnaik Award was presented to Prof. Kshirod Kumar Jena, while the Pranakrushna Parija Popular Science Book Award went to Rabindranath Majhi and Tulasi Swain. Young scientists, including Dr. Sarita Shekhar Pattnaik and Dr. Apramita Chand, were also recognized.

Reflecting on the broader impact, CM Majhi expressed hope that the next generation would revolutionize science, making it more accessible and beneficial to society. “Our scientists’ efforts will lead us to success,” he concluded, extending his best wishes to the awardees.

Science and Technology Minister Krushna Chandra Patra, also present, echoed the CM’s sentiments, noting the growing public interest in science due to its integration into daily life. “Whoever excels in science will truly be powerful,” he remarked.

The event underscored Odisha’s commitment to fostering a scientific temperament and leveraging technology for inclusive growth, setting the stage for a transformative future.
