Zudio’s rapid expansion may be creating new challenges for the popular affordable fashion brand, according to Go Zero Ice Creams founder and CEO Kiran Shah.
In a recent Instagram video, Shah discussed what he described as the “shocking downfall of Zudio” and identified two major concerns: rapid store expansion and declining perceptions of product quality.
Shah argued that Zudio’s aggressive growth has made the brand more common across Indian cities, potentially reducing the sense of exclusivity that helped make it popular among younger shoppers.
However, his comments are his opinion and assessment, rather than an official statement from Zudio or its parent company, Trent Limited.
Zudio’s rapid expansion could lead to brand fatigue
According to Shah, Zudio’s biggest challenge may be its own rapid growth.
He said the brand’s expansion to nearly 1,000 stores has made its products increasingly visible across Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities.
Shah argued that when shoppers repeatedly see similar Zudio products being worn by people around them, the brand can lose some of its novelty.
He particularly pointed to younger consumers, saying that Gen Z shoppers often value individuality and distinctive fashion choices.
In his view, the widespread availability of similar designs could therefore affect Zudio’s perception as a trendy fashion brand.
‘Three or four washes’ quality claim
Shah also raised concerns about the quality of Zudio’s clothing.
He claimed that some customers may feel the fabric does not hold up after repeated washing.
“Audience ko ab samajh aa chuka hai ki teen ya char wash ke baad inka fabric pochha ban jata hai,” Shah said in the video.
The comment translates roughly to the claim that some Zudio clothes can become like a cleaning rag after three or four washes.
There is no indication in the material provided that this claim represents an independent assessment of Zudio’s overall product quality.
Competition in affordable fashion grows
Shah also pointed to growing competition in India’s value-fashion segment.
He mentioned Reliance’s Yousta and Shoppers Stop’s Intune, saying such brands could benefit by offering new designs at similar price points.
The affordable fashion market has become increasingly competitive as retailers target younger shoppers who want frequent changes in styles without paying premium prices.
For Zudio, maintaining a balance between low prices, product quality, fresh designs and rapid expansion could therefore remain important.
Zudio expands beyond major cities
Zudio was launched by Trent Limited, the Tata Group’s retail arm, in 2016.
The brand started with a standalone store on Bengaluru’s Commercial Street after earlier concept testing through select Star Bazaar outlets.
Its growth has since been driven by an expanding store network and strong consumer interest in affordable fashion.
According to Shah, Zudio has increasingly moved beyond major metropolitan markets and into Tier 3 and Tier 4 cities.
He suggested that the Tata brand name could give Zudio an advantage in these markets, where consumer trust in established business groups may help the brand expand further.
What happens next for Zudio?
Zudio’s rapid growth has helped it become one of India’s most recognisable affordable-fashion chains. But continued expansion also brings challenges, including maintaining consistent product quality, keeping designs fresh and preventing brand fatigue.
Shah’s comments have added to the wider discussion around Zudio’s growth strategy. Whether these concerns translate into a sustained slowdown will depend on factors such as same-store sales, customer retention, store productivity and competition.
For now, the comments remain an external assessment of the brand, rather than evidence that Zudio is officially experiencing a “downfall”.
