Odisha is expected to experience continued rainfall until July 28, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting light to moderate rain across several parts of the state due to an active southwest monsoon and a prevailing trough line.
The weather office has also cautioned that Bahuda Yatra, scheduled for July 24, is likely to be affected by rain, similar to the weather conditions witnessed during the Gundicha Yatra.
Heavy Rain Alert for Several Districts
According to the IMD, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj are likely to receive heavy rainfall on Thursday. Several districts in north Odisha and parts of south Odisha are also expected to witness light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
Coastal districts may experience gusty surface winds of 30–40 kmph along with thunderstorm activity.
Athagarh Receives Highest Rainfall
The ongoing monsoon spell has brought significant rainfall across the state over the past 24 hours.
According to IMD data:
- Athagarh (Cuttack district): 206 mm rainfall (highest in the state)
- Hatadihi (Keonjhar district): 190.2 mm rainfall
Regional Meteorological Centre Director Manorama Mohanty said the active monsoon conditions and the trough line are likely to keep rainfall activity over Odisha active for the next several days. She also confirmed that Athagarh recorded extremely heavy rainfall during the reporting period.
Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Expected
The IMD said six locations across six districts recorded very heavy rainfall, while 36 places received heavy rainfall during the last 24 hours.
With rain expected to continue through the coming week, authorities have advised residents and pilgrims travelling for the Bahuda Yatra to remain alert, avoid waterlogged areas and follow official weather advisories.
