Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has advised private companies across Mumbai to allow employees to work from home wherever feasible, while non-essential government and semi-government offices will function only for a half-day on Monday due to intense monsoon rainfall.

The precautionary measures come after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.

WFH Advisory for Private Offices

In its advisory, the SDMA urged private establishments to adopt work-from-home arrangements wherever operationally possible to reduce commuting and ensure employee safety during the severe weather.

The authority said the advisory is intended to minimize travel as heavy rain continues to affect transportation and daily life across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Half-Day for Non-Essential Government Employees

The state government also directed that employees in non-essential government and semi-government departments will work only until noon.

The order does not apply to personnel engaged in essential services, who are expected to continue performing their duties to maintain emergency response and critical public services.

IMD Issues Red Alert for Mumbai Region

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, along with strong winds that could lead to waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruptions to public transport.

A red alert indicates the possibility of severe weather conditions and calls for heightened preparedness by both authorities and residents.

Authorities Urge Residents to Stay Safe

Officials have appealed to residents to remain indoors unless travel is absolutely necessary and to follow updates issued by government agencies and weather authorities.

People have also been advised to avoid waterlogged roads, exercise caution near flooded areas and cooperate with emergency services as the city continues to experience widespread monsoon-related disruptions.

Authorities are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation and have urged citizens to stay informed through official advisories.
